From our service data
We analysed our last 12 months of refrigerator or freezer repairs where a replacement part was needed. These are the ones that came up most often.

Repair counts and parts prices come from our own completed jobs over the last 12 months, not from an industry estimate. Ranked by how often each repair needed a replacement part. Many service calls are resolved without one.
Both figures are typical. Individual jobs can run higher, and parts prices vary by model, supplier and availability. You get a written quote before any repair work begins.
Prices exclude the $129.95 diagnostic visit fee and taxes.
Vacuum or brush the coils every 6-12 months so heat can escape properly and the compressor doesn't overwork.
Close the door on a strip of paper; if it slides out easily, the gasket needs cleaning or replacing.
Set the fridge to 3°C (37°F) and the freezer to -18°C (0°F) for safe, efficient operation.
Leave room around vents so cold air can circulate freely to every shelf and drawer.
Swap it every 6 months to keep ice makers and water dispensers running cleanly.
Leave a few inches of clearance around and behind the unit so coils can release heat properly.
A lid that won't seal tight lets warm air in and drives up frost. See why this happens and how it's fixed.

FAQ
Most popular questions we get asked.
Age and the specific failure decide it. Most technicians work off a rough halfway rule. If the repair costs more than about half of a comparable new fridge and the unit is already past the midpoint of its expected life, replacing it is the better financial call. A typical fridge lasts 10 to 15 years with normal care, and a new one runs $900 to $3,000. Parts for the common repairs on ours run $65 to $705, and that is parts only. Labour and diagnosis come on top. Anything at the low end of that range is worth doing no matter how old the unit is. Anything near the top, weigh against how much life it has left. Ask your technician for a straight read while they are in the house.
Clear water underneath is almost always a clogged defrost drain or a worn door seal. Both are simple fixes. What changes things is oily residue instead of clear water, or a sweet chemical smell. That can be a refrigerant leak. Stop using the fridge and get a technician in right away.
On its own, a dead ice maker tells you very little about the rest of the fridge. It is one of the most common single-part repairs we do. Parts on ours run $125 to $295, against $250 to $600 and up for a full assembly replacement. If the fridge is still cooling normally, fix the ice maker and ignore the age of the unit.
Probably not a repair. An old filter or water sitting in the line accounts for almost all of these. Change the filter, which manufacturers want done every six months anyway, then run a few litres through the dispenser to flush the line. If the taste holds, or the ice maker has quit as well, get it looked at.
