From our service data
We analysed our last 12 months of dryer repairs where a replacement part was needed. These are the ones that came up most often.
| Repair | 12 months | Parts | Labour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heating systemRuns a full cycle but clothes come out damp | ~1,400 | $55–$185 | $125–$145 |
| Drum supports and beltSquealing, thumping, or a drum that won't turn | ~1,300 | $50–$155 | $140–$165 |
| Main control boardWon't start, shuts off early, or ignores the cycle selected | ~950 | $140–$225 | $110–$120 |
| Motor and blowerNo tumble, weak airflow, or a loud motor | ~500 | $65–$355 | $140–$185 |
| Door and switchesWon't run with the door shut, or stops when the door is nudged | ~300 | $15–$40 | $90–$105 |
Repair counts and parts prices come from our own completed jobs over the last 12 months, not from an industry estimate. Ranked by how often each repair needed a replacement part. Many service calls are resolved without one.
Both figures are typical. Individual jobs can run higher, and parts prices vary by model, supplier and availability. You get a written quote before any repair work begins.
Prices exclude the $129.95 diagnostic visit fee and taxes.
This single habit does more to prevent fires and improve drying time than anything else you can do.
Oversized loads restrict tumbling and airflow, so clothes take longer to dry and the motor works harder.
Using the wrong heat or sensor setting for the fabric type often causes longer, less effective drying.
Running clothes longer than needed adds wear on fabric and unnecessary strain on the heating element.
Lint that builds up inside the duct restricts airflow and is a leading cause of dryer fires.
A yearly check catches worn belts, weak seals, and vent blockages before they become bigger problems.

Longer dry times on a gas dryer often point to a venting or airflow restriction. Here's how to track it down.

FAQ
Most popular questions we get asked.
No. Not a faint smell, not once. A gas dryer that is working correctly produces no gas odour at any point in the cycle. If you can smell gas, leave the house now. Do not flip light switches, unplug anything or use your phone inside, because any of those can create a spark. Once you are outside, call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911, and do not go back in until they say it is safe. After the gas supply has been checked, we can look at the dryer.
Hot to the touch on the outside during a cycle is how they run. Clothes that come out scorching at the end are not, and neither is a burning smell. A dryer shutting itself off partway through belongs in the same category. Nearly always that is restricted airflow trapping heat inside the cabinet, though a thermostat or element stuck on will do it as well. Stop running loads through it until someone has looked. A dryer that cannot shed the heat it makes is not something to keep using while you wait.
Usually one of the cheapest repairs on a dryer. If the motor still hums while the drum sits there, the drive belt has snapped or slipped off, and a belt is a cheap part and a straightforward job for a technician. Worn drum rollers or a failing motor turn up sometimes, and even those rarely justify a new machine unless the dryer is already old and has other problems. Stop using it in the meantime. A drum that is not turning while the heat is still running can overheat, and that is a fire risk.
Airflow, almost always. Lint collects in the trap and in the vent hose behind the machine. The exterior exhaust blocks up as well. Once the restriction is bad enough, the dryer cannot push the moist air out, so loads take longer even though the drum still gets hot. Clean the trap and the full vent line and most of these go away. If you have done that and the times keep creeping up, or the air coming out feels lukewarm rather than hot, the heating element is probably on its way out. A partially tripped breaker can look the same from the outside. Either one is worth a call instead of running a second cycle on every load.
Most dryers are worth fixing, because the parts are cheap next to the machine. Common repairs on ours run $15 to $355 in parts, and a new dryer is $700 to $1,200. Labour and diagnosis sit on top of the parts figure. A dryer lasts 10 to 13 years with normal care. Once a repair passes half the price of a replacement on a unit already past the middle of that, buy the new one.
