Refrigerator Leaking Water

A puddle under or inside your fridge is more than just a mess. Find out the most common sources and fixes.

Water pooling under or inside your fridge is most often caused by a clogged defrost drain, which backs up and overflows instead of draining away properly. A damaged water line connection, a cracked filter housing, or a worn door seal causing condensation can also be responsible, and the cause is usually easy to narrow down.

Common Causes

  • Clogged defrost drain. The fridge periodically defrosts itself and channels the melted water down a small drain to a pan underneath. Food debris or ice can block this drain, so the water backs up and spills out inside the fridge instead of draining away as it's supposed to. This is by far the most common reason we see for leaks that appear inside the fridge itself.
  • Damaged water line connection. The line that supplies your water dispenser and ice maker runs into the back of the fridge. A loose or cracked fitting at this connection point can slowly drip, often pooling underneath the unit rather than inside it, which is why it's easy to miss until the puddle spreads.
  • Cracked water filter housing. The housing that holds your water filter can crack over time, especially if the filter was installed or removed with too much force, and any crack will leak every time water flows through it. This usually shows up as a slow, steady drip rather than a sudden puddle, and it's easy to miss if the filter is tucked inside a lower panel out of view.
  • Condensation from a worn door seal. When the door gasket no longer seals tightly, warm, humid air gets pulled in every time the door closes. That moisture condenses on cold interior surfaces and can drip out as water pooling on the floor, especially in warmer or more humid parts of the house.

When to DIY vs. Call a Pro

You can check and clear a defrost drain yourself with warm water flushed gently down the drain opening, usually found at the back of the freezer compartment, and you can inspect the door seal for obvious cracks or gaps. If the leak traces back to the water line connection or filter housing, or flushing the drain doesn't stop it, call a technician rather than force anything apart.

FAQ

Is it normal for a small amount of water to collect in the drip pan?

Yes, a little condensation collecting in the drip pan underneath the fridge is normal and evaporates on its own. The problem is water pooling somewhere else, like inside the fridge or spreading across the kitchen floor, which usually means the drain or a connection has failed.

Why does my fridge only leak sometimes?

Intermittent leaks are often tied to defrost cycles, which happen every several hours, so water may only appear after the fridge has gone through a defrost. This pattern usually points to the drain rather than a constant water line issue, which would typically leak steadily instead.

Could the leak be coming from somewhere other than the fridge?

It's worth checking, since a dishwasher or nearby plumbing can sometimes be mistaken for a fridge leak, especially in kitchens where appliances sit close together. Pull the fridge out slightly and run it for a few hours to confirm the water is actually coming from underneath the unit before assuming it's the fridge itself.

Will a water leak damage my flooring?

Standing water can damage laminate, hardwood, or the subfloor if it sits for an extended period, so it's worth addressing sooner rather than later even if the leak seems minor right now. A small puddle today can mean warped flooring in a few weeks, and repeated leaks can eventually lead to mould if they're left unchecked.

Can I use tape to fix a cracked filter housing?

A temporary seal might slow a leak, but it won't hold long term and can affect water quality, since the crack sits right in the path of your drinking water. It's better to have the housing properly replaced.
