Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working
No ice, slow ice, or a jammed maker are common complaints. Learn the usual culprits and what to check first.
If your refrigerator's ice maker has stopped producing ice, the cause is usually a frozen or clogged water line, though a faulty water inlet valve, a worn-out ice maker assembly, or low household water pressure can also be responsible. Most ice maker problems are quick to diagnose, and they don't affect the safety of your food storage.
You can safely check that the water line shutoff valve behind the fridge is fully open, confirm the ice maker's power switch or arm is set to "on," and replace the water filter if it hasn't been changed in the last six months. Diagnosing a failed inlet valve, control board, or internal ice maker assembly involves testing electrical components, which is best left to a technician.
Why does my ice taste or smell off, separate from it not working?
Old ice sitting in the bin can pick up freezer odours, and an overdue water filter can affect taste too. Neither of these stops the ice maker from working, but they're worth mentioning to a technician while they're already there, since a filter swap is a quick add-on.
Can a clogged water filter stop ice production completely?
Yes, a heavily clogged filter can restrict water flow enough that little or no water reaches the ice maker. Replacing the filter is a quick first check before assuming a bigger part has failed, and most filters are designed to be swapped without tools.
Should I hear water filling the ice tray during a cycle?
Yes, you should hear a brief filling sound every couple of hours. If you never hear it, that points to the inlet valve or water line rather than the ice maker mechanism itself, since the tray isn't getting any water to work with.
Is it normal for ice production to slow down in winter?
Yes, if your home's water pressure drops seasonally, or the line running to the fridge passes through a colder space like an unheated garage, production can slow or stop until pressure or temperature recover. This is more common in older homes than newer builds.
Do I need to replace the whole ice maker, or can it be repaired?
Some ice maker faults come down to a single part, like the inlet valve. On many models, though, the parts come as assemblies, so the repair means replacing the whole assembly. Newer fridges also have more components involved in the ice making process, a technician can tell you which after a quick diagnosis, to the component and cost.
