From our service data
We analysed our last 12 months of microwave repairs where a replacement part was needed. These are the ones that came up most often.
| Repair | 12 months | Parts | Labour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetron and high-voltage systemRuns and turns but doesn't heat the food | ~160 | $115–$240 | $165–$220 |
| Door and latch assemblyWon't start with the door shut, or the door won't latch properly | ~150 | $50–$240 | $95–$110 |
| Main control boardDead panel, won't accept input, or shuts off part way through | ~110 | $135–$170 | $95–$115 |
Repair counts and parts prices come from our own completed jobs over the last 12 months, not from an industry estimate. Ranked by how often each repair needed a replacement part. Many service calls are resolved without one.
Both figures are typical. Individual jobs can run higher, and parts prices vary by model, supplier and availability. You get a written quote before any repair work begins.
Prices exclude the $129.95 diagnostic visit fee and taxes.
A clogged filter is the top cause of weak venting and can make a healthy fan sound like it's struggling.
OTR vent fans capture exhaust better from back burners than from the front of the cooktop.
Splatters left inside can scorch, smoke, and interfere with the door seal over time.
Operating a microwave with nothing inside can damage the magnetron over repeated use.
A door that doesn't close fully can prevent the unit from heating at all.
These are the leading cause of sparking and arcing damage inside the cavity.
A loud microwave usually points to the magnetron, the cooling fan or the turntable motor. Here's what it means.
Causes
Weak or silent airflow above your cooktop is usually a filter or fan motor issue, not a cooking-related fault. Here's the fix.

FAQ
Most popular questions we get asked.
Microwaves are the one appliance where replacement often wins, because a new one is only $150 to $600. Parts for common repairs run $50 to $240 before labour and diagnosis, so the arithmetic gets tight quickly. The rule does not change. Past half the cost of a new unit, on a microwave already beyond the middle of a 7 to 10 year life, you are better off buying new.
Unplug it the moment you see a spark, then let it cool and look inside. A single flash with clean interior walls and no burnt smell hanging around is usually nothing serious. Grease or food splatter on the small cover that shields the microwave-generating parts is the normal cause, and that cover is an inexpensive part. Blackened or pitted metal is the sign not to ignore. A hole burned through anywhere inside is the same. If the smell will not clear either, leave it unplugged until a technician has been through it.
A safety interlock has failed. Unplug it and leave it that way until a technician has been. No careful workaround here.
Nothing about that combination says the microwave is finished. The usual find is a door switch that has stopped signalling, and sometimes it is only a fuse. Both are cheap parts. The component that actually generates the heat can fail too, and that is a pricier fix worth weighing against the age of the unit. It is the less likely answer, not the first thing to assume.
Plenty of over-the-range microwaves do not vent outside at all. They pull air through filters and push it back into the kitchen, which clears far less smoke than a proper range hood. That is the design, not a fault. If yours is ducted to the outside and still is not clearing the air, have a technician check that the internal blower faces the right way and the filters are not clogged.
