Gas Stove Won't Ignite

Clicking with no flame, or no click at all, points to a specific ignition fault. Learn what's likely behind it.

If your gas stovetop burners won't ignite properly, the most common cause is a dirty or faulty igniter that can't produce a strong enough spark to light the gas reliably. Clogged burner ports, moisture on the igniter, or a gas supply issue can also be responsible. This usually affects multiple burners at once rather than just one specific burner.

Common Causes

  • Dirty or faulty igniter. The igniter creates the spark that lights the gas at each individual burner on the cooktop. Food debris, grease, and spilled liquid can coat the igniter over time, weakening the spark until it can no longer light the burner reliably, especially after a boil-over goes uncleaned for a while.
  • Clogged burner ports. The small ports around each burner head where gas actually exits can clog with food debris or grease buildup over time, which can prevent gas from reaching the igniter in the right amount even when the spark itself is working fine and clicking normally at every single attempt.
  • Moisture on the igniter. Water from cooking spills, cleaning, or ambient kitchen humidity can settle on the igniter and temporarily prevent it from sparking properly, which is one of the more common and easily fixed causes on this whole list, often resolving on its own once things dry out completely overnight.
  • Gas supply issue. An issue further upstream, like a partially closed shutoff valve behind the range, can affect ignition across every burner at once rather than just a single one, which is a useful clue when narrowing down the cause before calling for service.

When to DIY vs. Call a Pro

You can safely clean the igniter and burner ports with a soft brush, and dry off any visible moisture before trying again, which resolves a large share of ignition complaints on its own without needing a technician visit at all. It's also worth noting whether the issue coincides with humid weather or a recent boil-over, since that context is useful to mention when booking. Confirming the gas shutoff valve behind the stove is fully open is also safe to check. Diagnosing a persistent spark or gas supply issue involves working with the stove's gas components, which is a job for a technician.

FAQ

Why do all my burners fail to ignite at once instead of just one?

This usually points to a gas supply issue or a shared spark module rather than a problem with an individual burner, since each burner typically has its own igniter but shares the same gas line and often the same spark control board wired throughout the range.

Is it safe to light a burner manually with a match if it won't spark on its own?

This isn't recommended, since it bypasses a safety feature designed to confirm proper ignition before gas continues to flow into the burner chamber. It's safer to address the underlying spark issue than to work around it with an open flame nearby.

Can grease buildup really stop ignition completely on its own?

Yes, a heavily coated igniter can lose its spark almost entirely, which is one of the most common and easiest to fix causes on this whole list. A simple cleaning with a soft brush resolves a large share of ignition complaints we see across the GTA every year.

Why does my burner click continuously without ever lighting up?

Continuous clicking without ignition usually means the spark is working but the gas isn't reaching the burner properly, or vice versa, so it's worth checking burner ports for clogs before assuming the igniter itself has failed and needs full replacement.

Is this different from an oven not heating on the same gas range?

Yes, the stovetop burners and the oven typically have separate ignition systems on most ranges, so a burner ignition issue doesn't necessarily mean the oven is affected, and vice versa, even though they're part of the same overall appliance and share a gas supply line.
