Front Load Washer Won't Drain
Standing water at the end of a cycle usually means something's blocking the drain path. Here's where to look first.
A front load washer that won't drain is most often caused by a clogged drain pump filter, which traps lint, coins, and small debris over time. A kinked or blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or a blocked coin trap can also stop water from clearing. This is usually one of the quicker issues to diagnose.
You can safely check and clean the drain pump filter yourself, since most models are designed for this with a simple access panel and no tools required, and you can check that the drain hose isn't kinked behind the machine. If the filter is clear and the hose is fine but the washer still won't drain, the pump itself likely needs to be tested or replaced, which is a job for a technician since it involves partially disassembling the machine.
Where is the drain pump filter located?
On most front load washers, it's behind a small door near the bottom front corner of the machine. Keep a shallow pan or towels handy when you open it, since water trapped in the line will drain out as soon as you remove the cap, and it can be more water than people expect.
How often should I clean the filter?
Every three to six months is a reasonable routine, more often if you regularly wash items with pockets or small parts. A filter that's never been cleaned is one of the most common causes of drainage complaints we see.
Why is there a burning smell along with the drainage issue?
A burning smell usually points to the drain pump motor working overtime or starting to fail, rather than the filter or hose. If you notice this, it's worth having a technician look at it soon rather than continuing to run cycles.
Can standing water in the drum damage the washer?
Water sitting in the drum for an extended period can lead to odour and mould buildup inside the machine, even if it doesn't damage major components right away. It's worth addressing the drainage issue promptly rather than running more loads in the meantime, since the smell can transfer to clean clothes.
Is it safe to run the washer again if it didn't drain last time?
It's better to hold off until the cause is identified, since running another cycle with existing water in the drum can put extra strain on the pump and may cause overflow onto the floor. Bailing out the standing water first is a reasonable precaution either way.
