Front Load Washer Not Spinning

Clothes coming out soaking wet? A spin failure has a few common causes, from the lid lock to the drive system.

A front load washer that won't spin is often caused by the unbalanced load sensor stopping the cycle to protect the machine, though a worn drive belt, a failing motor coupling, or a door lock issue can also be responsible. Redistributing the load evenly around the drum is worth trying before assuming a part has actually failed.

Common Causes

  • Unbalanced load sensor trip. Front load washers use a sensor to detect when a load has shifted to one side of the drum, which can happen with heavy items like towels or bedding, and the machine will stop spinning rather than risk damage or excessive vibration. This is by far the most common reason for a stalled spin cycle and usually needs no repair at all, just a quick rearrange of the load.
  • Worn drive belt. The belt connects the motor to the drum and is what actually makes it spin. Belts stretch and wear with age, and a worn or slipped belt can leave the drum unable to reach spin speed even though the motor is running fine. You may notice a squealing sound as a worn belt slips against its pulley during the spin attempt.
  • Failing motor coupling. The coupling connects the motor shaft to the transmission and is designed to be a weaker part on purpose, so it fails before more expensive components do under heavy strain. A broken coupling means the motor runs but the drum doesn't spin at all, and it's a common failure point on machines that regularly wash heavy loads like comforters or towels.
  • Door lock or latch failure. Most front load washers won't spin unless the door lock confirms the door is securely closed, as a safety measure. If the lock mechanism itself fails, the machine may treat the door as open even when it's shut, so the wash cycle runs but skips the spin stage entirely, leaving clothes soaked at the end.

When to DIY vs. Call a Pro

You can safely redistribute an unbalanced load by pausing the cycle and rearranging items evenly around the drum, and you can check that the door is closing and latching properly with no obstruction in the seal. Diagnosing a worn belt, a failed motor coupling, or a faulty door lock mechanism requires opening up the machine, which is a job for a technician rather than something to attempt at home.

FAQ

Why does my washer stop mid-cycle instead of finishing?

This is usually the unbalanced load sensor catching a shifted load partway through and pausing to protect the machine, rather than a mechanical failure. Try redistributing the load evenly around the drum and restarting the spin cycle before assuming anything is actually broken or calling for service.

Is a clicking noise during spin normal?

A clicking or clunking noise during spin often points to a worn motor coupling or a loose object caught somewhere in the drum, like a coin or button. It's worth checking pockets before your next load and having a technician take a look if the noise continues.

Can overloading the washer cause spin problems?

Yes, overloading makes it much harder for the machine to balance the load evenly, which increases the chances of the sensor tripping or extra strain being placed on the belt and coupling over time, shortening their lifespan.

Will the washer still finish the wash cycle if it can't spin?

Usually not fully, since most machines pause or skip the final spin if it can't complete safely, which can leave clothes wetter than usual at the end of the cycle and sitting in the drum longer than expected before you notice.

Is this the same issue as a washer that won't drain?

They can look similar since both leave water in the drum, but a drainage problem usually involves standing water throughout the entire cycle, while a spin problem typically shows up specifically at the final spin stage after the water has already cleared.
